East Texans will have a chance to make words, make friends and make a difference in the community at the second annual Scrabble With Friends on Oct. 30.
The event is a fundraiser for the East Texas Literacy Council, said executive director Jennifer Slade.
"We did this for the first time last year and it proved very popular," Slade said. "So we're doing it again and hoping to get more people involved."
The event replaces the nonprofit agency's former fall fundraiser, Doodles & Dessert.
"Doodles & Dessert was fun, but it wasn't really bringing in much money any more and we wanted something that people could really participate in, not just a venue for them to come and spend money," Slade said.
People can sign up to play Scrabble with Friends either as teams or individuals. Competition will be in teams of eight and those who arrive alone or in couples will be assigned to teams by members of the ETLC staff, she said.
"It got very competitive last year and people had a lot of fun," Slade said. "We'll also have an option of allowing competitors to buy extra tiles, if they want to make a specific word and don't have all the letters they need."
In addition to the games, the event will feature appetizers and a silent auction. The money will go into the agency's general fund.
"Because it's the day before Halloween, we're offering people the option of dressing in costumes if they want," Slade said. "However, we realize that some people may be coming directly from work and regular clothes are certainly okay, too."
The agency served about 700 clients in 2011 and is on track to see even more people this year, she said.
"We're continuing to see an increase every year in the number of clients who are seeking our assistance to improve their literacy skills," Slade said.
Scrabble With Friends will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the faith center of the First United Methodist Church of Longview, 400 N. Fredonia St. (use Whaley Street entrance). The deadline to register is Thursday. Cost is $40 per person or $300 for a team of eight. For information, call (903) 757-9302 or visit www.EastTexasLiteracyCouncil.org.
