Lufkin game to be part of Great American Rivalry Series

Longview athletic director/head coach John King announced Wednesday that the Lobos' Sept. 20 meeting with rival Lufkin will be a part of the Great American Rivalry Series, one of 80 premiere rivalries across the nation.
Presented by iHigh, the game will feature offensive and defensive MVPs as well as a trophy for the winning team. The senior with the highest GPA on each team will receive a scholarship, and a player or coach from each team, past or present, will be inducted into the Great American Rivalry Series Hall of Fame.
"I think it's great for both programs to be a part of the series," King said. "We were in it in 2009 against Marshall and they do a great job, it's first class.
"The scholarship, the trophies and the opportunity to induct a player into the Hall of Fame are all great for our program. It was a great game in 2009 and it's great to be part of that series again – the kids loved it and if it benefits student-athletes, we're going to do it."
The game is also Longview's homecoming.
