Signatures verified, Longview alcohol petition headed to council

A proposition to allow the "beer and wine sales for off premise consumption" will go before the Longview city council at its Feb. 14 meeting to be placed on the May 11 election ballot.

Longview City Secretary Shelly Ballinger has verified the minimum 5,375 signatures of registered Longview voters on the petition to call the election, said city spokesman Shawn Hara.

If the proposition passes in May, grocery and convenience stores in the historically dry areas of west and north Longview would be able to sell beer and wine, but not hard liquor.

"The City of Longview does not have the option of deciding whether or not to call the election, they are putting it as an action item to call it," Hara said.
