Welcome to the 2012 Longview News-Journal/ETVarsity.com All-East Texas Football Team
Jan. 26, 2013 at 10 p.m.
When the staff of the Longview News-Journal and ETvarsity.com met up at a local eatery to select the annual All-East Texas Football Team, it didn't take long to get a reminder of how blessed football fans in East Texas are.
That was the easy part.
The difficult part came when we attempted to narrow the list of great high school football players in this area to 60 (30 on the first and second teams). It was frustrating at times, but in the end there were no casualties (unless you count the major dent my staff put in the chicken wing population).
The result is the first Longview News-Journal/ETvarsity.com All-East Texas Football Team.
By adding ETvarsity.com to our coverage area, we expanded from the normal 40-45 teams we've covered in the past to almost 100 East Texas high schools.
The result is a coverage area that reaches north to Texarkana, west to Waskom, south to Diboll and East to Corsicana.
Finding great football players from such a vast area was like shooting fish in a barrel. Narrowing that list down? That's another story.
I urge you to look at this team and understand how seriously we took the task of bestowing honors on the players, and also understand that we realize your selections probably won't match up exactly with our picks. Feel free to let me know what you think of our selections, but do so with an understanding that I will challenge you to tell me who to remove from the team.
In other words ... don't just tell me a player should have been added. With the talent in this area, we could have done that all day. Tell me who didn't deserve to be on the team.
Bet you can't do it.
These kids should be celebrated for their accomplishments, and that's what we attempt to do with each All-East Texas team.
