Whether it's stocking up on supplies for student housing or getting an extra-early start on Christmas shopping, the Asbury House Garage Sale will offer bargains for every budget on Friday.
The annual event is the primary fundraiser for Asbury House Child Enrichment Center, which provides a faith-based preschool curriculum for low-income children, said director Pam Surles.
"We depend on the profits from this sale to fund our operations throughout the year," Surles said.
The center recently expanded and now has 60 children enrolled, she said.
A variety of volunteers help to get things organized and set up for the sale at the First United Methodist Church, said co-chair Susie Dunn. Because Asbury House is a mission of local Methodist churches, most of the volunteers are Methodists, but other people also show up to help.
"Some of the volunteers have been coming out for years," Dunn said. "We all love the children at Asbury House and want to be part of helping them out."
One such volunteer is Pat Clifton, who hasn't missed a chance to help out at the garage sale since she began in 1992.
"You see friends here that you don't see at any other time of year," Clifton said. "It's interesting to see what people are donating and I know it's all for a good cause."
The garage sale generally only carries clothing in sizes 0 to 6X, but will offer a few brand-new young adult apparel items this year that were donated by a local merchant, Dunn said.
Other items available at the sale include furniture, china, glassware, dishes, decorative items, jewelry, bedding, baskets, purses, luggage, kitchen items, baby equipment, books, toys and electronics.
The one-day sale runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday. Prior to 11 a.m., there is a $1 admission fee; afterwards entrance is free.
People can come early to get the best selection or later in the day to get the best bargains, Dunn said. Much of the merchandise will be discounted during the final hours of the sale.
