Gregg County Judge Bill Stoudt will lead a team of elected officials hailing from Dallas to Marshall on the I-20 East Texas Working Group.
Texas Transportation Commissioner Jeff Austin III formed the 17-member panel to study the route's future with input from stakeholders on the needs in rural areas. Mayors and county judges along the route comprise the group.
The study group will hold its first meeting either July 11 or July 18 in Longview.
The panel will look at all modes of transportation along the corridor and ways historical U.S. 80 can support the east-west flow of goods and people.
"The key word we all talk about is 'interconnectivity,'" Stoudt said.
Stoudt said Texas' significant population growth necessitates more transportation planning.
"We're not prepared for the influx of traffic," he said. "We're playing catch-up."
