Trinity to play first night home game after renting lights
Sept. 5, 2013 at 11 p.m.
When discussing high school football in the state of Texas, many people make the association of playing under the Friday night lights.
For the Trinity School of Texas, that's a feeling it has never experienced on its home field. Through the first three years of competition, Titan Field didn't have lights.
And while TST now has lights at its stadium, the team won't play on Friday. The Titans will play their first home night game in program history at 7 p.m Saturday against Tyler HEAT.
"Everyone is very excited," TST head coach Thomas Emerson said. "Usually, we have to play night games on the road on Fridays. Now that we have lights at our house, we can host night games here.
"When we announced that we were getting lights, everyone wanted a schedule."
Emerson said a lot of the parents got together last year and talked about getting lights on the field. He said that one parent this year stepped up and suggested renting them, which was eventually the direction the program went.
"It got finalized about three weeks ago, during two-a-days," Emerson said. "I was scrambling, trying to change times."
Emerson said one of the benefits of the lights will be avoiding playing during the heat of the day at 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
"It doesn't get much hotter than at 2 p.m., and that's definitely a health issue," the coach said. "It's cooler at 7, and we are hoping it will help our endurance."
With only nine players on the roster, the Titans are looking for any possible edge when it comes to conditioning.
"We are thin on numbers," Emerson said. "We are playing iron man football, so we have to do whatever we can to keep our players fresh."
The Titans will look to bounce back from a 54-8 setback against Fruitvale in the opener.
"That was a wake-up call," Emerson said. "We have to correct the mistakes and hopefully christen our first home night game with a win."
