KILGORE - A preseason Top 10 team, the Kilgore Rangers were looking to avoid a 0-3 start to the season.
Joe Lynch intercepted a Ryan Polite pass attempt deep in Kilgore territory with less than two minutes remaining to help secure a 24-19 victory for the Rangers over the Trinity Valley Cardinals Saturday night at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium.
Trinity Valley dominated the yardage count 451-293, but Kilgore was opportunistic all game, forcing four turnovers and blocking two kicks.
The Rangers got on the board late in the first quarter with a 2-yard run by Eddie Smith to take an early 7-0 lead. On the next drive, Trinity Valley drove down the field and got in position for a 32-yard field goal by Dylan McLain, but Kilgore's Nick Fisher blocked the attempt. Fisher broke up a pass on the previous play that would have given the Cardinals a first down.
When Kilgore got the ball back, it was forced to punt, but Trinity Valley mishandled the return, and Kilgore's Derek David jumped on the loose ball – the first of two fumble recoveries for him in the contest. The Rangers capitalized on the Cardinals' misfortunes, using five plays to go 19 yards and scoring on a 6-yard run by Ladaedrix Payton for a 14-0 lead.
Trinity Valley, which took a 72-7 win over Coffeyville earlier in the season, finally got on the board late in the first half with a 6-yard run from quarterback Ryan Polite.
Polite was 33 of 48 through the air for 355 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. He also ran for 20 yards. The Cardinals rushed for 126 yards with nine different ball carries, none gaining more than 27 yards.
Trinity Valley came out in the third quarter and scored quickly as Polite tossed a 14-yard pass to Christian Taylor, but Kilgore blocked to extra-point attempt to keep a 14-13 lead.
The Rangers quickly answered exactly three minutes later when Tanner Tausch found former Longview Lobo Colin Jeter for a 19-yard strike to make it 21-13.
Tausch was 20 of 28 for 198 yards and the score. Derrick Ledet was his main target, hauling in seven receptions for 103 yards.
The score remained at 21-13 until the latter part of the fourth quarter when Luis Sanchez connected on a 33-yard field goal to push the Kilgore advantage to 24-13.
Trinity Valley used a quick passing game to march down the field to set up a 1-yard run from Tavarreon Dickerson with 2:12 remaining. The Cardinals couldn't connect on the two-point pass attempt.
Smith led the Rangers with 72 yards on 24 carries.
Jarvis Baxter had nine catches for 105 yards for TVCC.
