Gregg County sheriff's investigators are probing a homicide Saturday evening after finding a 45-year-old man fatally shot in a home just outside Kilgore.
Kilgore police and sheriff's deputies responded to a 4:53 p.m. call to a secluded home in woods near Texas 31 at Texas 42, said Chuck Willeford, chief deputy for Sheriff Maxey Cerliano.
"Upon arrival, they located a white male, deceased, inside the home with an apparent gunshot wound," Willeford said.
The man was identified as James Carson Smith.
No one was taken into custody Saturday, Willeford said.
Smith was pronounced dead at the scene by Pct. 3 Justice of the Peace Talyna Carlson, and his body was sent to Southeast Texas Forensic Center in Tyler for an autopsy.
The chief said few details could be shared at this time. The home is off the 1100 block of Texas 31 and barely outside the Kilgore city limits, he said.
"The investigation will continue with the Gregg County Sheriff's office," Willeford said. "And once it's completed, it will be turned over to the Gregg County district attorney for further review."
Online county records show Smith was scheduled to pleaded guilty March 7 to charges of deadly conduct/discharge firearm and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a date, family or household member.
The records indicate the charges arise from a Nov. 5, 2012, incident. Smith was arrested on the assault charge on that date and was freed on $20,000 bond the next day.
