Also, Sgt. James Barron was in attendance to formally present Boyd with his nomination packet for the 2015 Army All-American Bowl, which will be played Jan. 3, 2015, at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
Boyd is one of 300 players that will be chosen from to participate in the contest.
"This is pretty big," Boyd said. "It feels great to be recognized. It's something kids dream of."
Gilmer has had three former players compete in the Army All-American Bowl – David Snow, Justin Johnson and Curtis Brown.
"This is our fifth player who has been nominated," Gilmer head coach Jeff Traylor said. "It's pretty special. We've had a lot of great players."
Boyd will now wait and see if he makes the final cut for the game.
"It would be a blessing and I would be honored," Boyd said. "I remember when Curtis played in it, and I dreamed of one day getting the chance."
Boyd is a four-star prospect by Rivals, ESPN, 247Sports and Scout, and he currently holds several Division I offers.
Coaches from Notre Dame and Kansas were expected to come to Gilmer to visit Boyd later on Thursday.
