Five East Texas friends shared one goal: to complete a half-marathon. After some training and lots of moral support, this group — made up of two athletes and three self-proclaimed couch potatoes — were ready to take on The Big D Texas Marathon:

Beth Wells, Elaine Hale, Elizabeth Hutcheson, Kathy Watson and Sally Rathbun completed the half-marathon in about four hours. |

The ladies met early Saturday morning in Kilgore where they all piled into one SUV and hit the road. Once they arrived in Dallas, they made a B-line for the mall ... but they didn't stay late! They knew they needed to get to sleep early and rest up for their big day.
Sunday morning they gathered with about 3,000 others at the starting line to begin their 13.1-mile trek. With smiles on their faces and matching slogans on their T-shirts ("I think I can, I think I can"), the ladies motivated each other and marveled at the beautiful scenery of Fair Park and other spots along the course.
They completed their half-marathon about four hours from when they started, and each received a medal marking their amazing accomplishment!
Although they were tired from a long day, their sense of satisfaction was so great that they went to celebrate at a nearby mexican restaurant. Over hot plates of enchiladas and tacos, the group started planning their next big walk — they were ready to do it again!
