Road Trip: Galveston

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

A quarter of a century ago, a tradition began among a group of six Hallsville High School teachers. They packed their bags and hit the beach at Bolivar Peninsula near Galveston to enjoy a relaxing, low-key week during their summer vacation days. Each year since, more than 90 women have joined in this fun event. This year marked the 25th anniversary of the group known as the Gilchrist Girls Club, and 19 ladies came out to participate in this year's theme: 25 Years of Sunshine and Silver Linings!

As soon as the gals got together at their two-story condo on the beach, the stress of school began to melt away. They quickly slipped into relaxation mode as they chatted and caught up on each other's lives while away from their obligations.

During the week, the women came and went as they pleased. They spent their lazy days soaking up the sun, reading beach-appropriate novels, going for long walks and splashing in the salty waves. Because they brought their own food to share, they rarely had to leave their cozy beach spot - unless they went to shopping at some of Galveston's cute little boutiques.

One evening they visited a new restaurant on Crystal Beach. They had a nice meal as they sat watching the barges and ships pass through the waterway.

The Gilchrist Girls have celebrated their 25th year. Here's to 25 more!
