Road Trip: New York

Wednesday, December 31, 2008

This summer, Longview resident Suzette Whinnery, along with her immediate and extended family, gathered for a trip to New York City, a first time for most of the clan. Their Big Apple journey left them with a lifetime of experiences and memories.

Most of their packed itinerary centered around the Manhattan area. They were tourists, so, logically, they acted like tourists the whole trip! Hungry for an adventure and not satisfied until their feet could walk no more, they trekked to all the destinations they could.

A favorite memory for all was a trip to Staten Island to see the famous lady herself, the Statue of Liberty. The ferry was packed with more than 300 people, and they could tell by the speech and dress that not all were Americans. Lady Liberty was visible and people were abuzz during the entire voyage; yet on their final approach to the island, there was silence. It was the kind of silence that only the deepest reverence could inspire. Suzette and her family were in awe, not only of Lady Liberty, but of the deep patriotism felt by all on board.

Another thing that stood out in the minds of the gals: They could easily spot the true New Yorkers by their appearance. Most wore iPods and darted through the sidewalk traffic with ease and grace. These natives were fit. That's right, not a single obese one of them. Daily these people walk blocks and blocks ... and then more blocks. The concept of less riding and more walking is one that the ladies plan to bring back to East Texas with them. Time to exercise!

Other fun excursions included standing in Grand Central Station, looking up at Times Square and riding the subway. They were at "Good Morning America," and a few caught "The Today Show." Some saw two Broadway shows, others saw just one. Some wandered through Central Park, while others wanted to experience FAO Schwartz. Some went to the top of the Empire State Building, others dined at Tavern on the Green. The youngsters toured NBC Studios, and the older gals enjoyed drooling over jewels at Tiffany & Co.

After all the shopping, eating, walking and enjoying entertainment, they all agreed that this was the most excellent of family vacations!
