Karen Kendrick and her sister Renee Hughes try their best to spend their birthdays together. In June 2008, they met at the beautiful Sentinel Island Lightstation, a lighthouse-turned-lodging location on a small island in the picturesque Lynn Canal in Alaska.

Black bears couldn't resist the aroma of fresh grilled Alaskan King Salmon at Taku Glacier Lodge. |
From Juneau, they chartered a small boat to get to the lighthouse where they would be staying. Once they reached their destination, they unpacked their bags and marveled at the six-acre island they had all to themselves (along with Renee's husband, Gary, and their pooch, Sabina).
Mother Nature took their breaths away each day as they awoke to have their coffee and watch the whales and sea lions play in the icy waters. Afternoons were spent playing card games on the deck as they watched the eagles fly by, while they filled their nights sipping cocktails and grilling delicious fresh salmon and eating dungeness crab.
One day, the gals took a short floatplane ride to Taku Bay for lunch at the Taku Glacier Lodge. The flight allowed the sisters to take in views of magnificent glaciers and deep blue crevasses of the Juneau Icefield. Upon arrival, they sat down for a tasty meal of fresh Alaska King Salmon. As soon as the fish was off the grill, black bears even emerged from the forest to see about any leftovers!
The ladies then went about their sightseeing, shopping and marveling at natural wonders such as the Mendenhall Glacier, the famous 12-mile-long glacier in Mendhenhall Valley.
Karen and Renee enjoyed their 10-day stay as lighthouse keepers, and will hopefully celebrate their birthdays there again!
