Illegal immigrant convicted of killing Houston policeman
HOUSTON — An illegal immigrant from Mexico has been convicted in the 2006 shooting death of a Houston policeman.
Jurors late Thursday found 34-year-old Juan Leonardo Quintero-Perez guilty of capital murder in the slaying of Officer Rodney Johnson.
The 40-year-old lawman was killed during a September 2006 traffic stop. Johnson was shot four times in the head after arresting Quintero-Perez for driving without a license.
Records show Quintero-Perez was deported in 1999 after being convicted of indecency with a child, but he slipped back into Texas.
Next comes the punishment phase. Quintero-Perez could get the death penalty.
