A Nacogdoches High School student — who was transported to the hospital Thursday morning after being struck by a vehicle while walking on FM 225 outside of the loop — suffered injuries that did not appear to be life threatening, Nacogdoches Police Department Lt. of Special Operations Dan Taravella said late Thursday.
"The hospital indicated that she had suffered several broken bones, and that appeared to be it," Taravella said.
Before the accident occurred, 16-year-old Kayla Luman had just left her home near Sandy Ridge Road, and was walking along the side of FM 225 when she was hit by a white Chevy Equinox traveling eastbound toward town, according to NPD Officer Stephen Godfrey.
The accident occurred shortly before 7 a.m., Godfrey said.
"The vehicle was traveling eastbound into town right about the time that school buses were picking up," Godfrey said. "A juvenile had left her residence that was located on the southside of the roadway and walked to the edge of the roadway and was facing east walking on the edge of the roadway."
Officers believe the driver of the vehicle, Leslie Knight of Ridgeview Drive, did not see Kayla before the accident occurred. They also said it was still dark when Kayla was struck by the vehicle.
"Impact was made on the right front bumper," Godfrey said.
After hearing witness accounts and surveying the evidence, Taravella said they do not believe that the speed of Knight's car played a role in the accident.
Two of Kayla's brothers were at the scene, and officers believe that one of the boys witnessed the accident, Taravella said.
At the time of the accident, Knight's young child was in the car with her, Taravella said.
A Nacogdoches ISD school bus arrived at the scene minutes after the accident, but Taravella said he did not know if the bus was there to transport Kayla and her brothers to school.
