Jarvis Christian College President Sebetha Jenkins, has announced her plans to retire effective Dec. 31, according to a press release from the college.
Jenkins has served as president of the Hawkins college for 17 years. She has been a teacher and administrator in higher education since 1960.
As president, Jenkins oversaw new construction and some major renovations at the college. She also presided over a "strategic increase" in student enrollment and helped increase alumni involvement and donations to the college.
In a written statement, Jenkins said she would miss the "ever changing higher education atmosphere," the college campus and the opportunity to influence the lives of students, faculty and staff. "I wish to thank my alumni and the board of trustees for their support and encouragement for the past 17 years," Jenkins said.
Jenkins could not be reached for further comment Friday afternoon.
Board members praised Jenkins leadership at the college.
Chairman James Atkinson noted the growth, development and stability of the college during her tenure, according to the press release. Atkinson will lead the search committee for a new president.
"Rather than dwell on the retirement of our president, I would prefer that the college community join me in being thankful for the opportunity we have had to have her services for 17 years," said board member Eddie Poindexter.
The college's board of trustees has granted Jenkins a sabbatical beginning Aug. 1.
