The College Report: Daingerfield golfer continues winning ways at Rice

Daingerfield's Jade Scott, a freshman at Rice, closed with a 65 to post a 204 total and walk away with the individual title at the David Toms Intercollegiate Golf Tournament held at the Country Club of Louisiana in Baton Rouge.

Scott had 17 birdies in the 54-hole event, helping lead Rice to its best round in a decade (279) and a tie for fifth in the 14-school tournament.

"For Jade to win a tournament of this caliber in just his fourth college event is pretty awesome," Rice Coach Drew Scott said on the school's web site. "He hit the ball inside 10 feet of the first five holes. He also had some key up-and-downs, including the one-putt on the par five after hitting into the water. These are things you have to do if you are going to shoot a score like 65."

Adriana Gonzalez, a Tatum graduate, earned was named the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Setter of the Week after her performance in matches against University of Saint Mary and Ottawa University. The Sterling College volleyball team won both matches by 3-0 scores with the help of the freshman setter. In the win over Saint Mary, Gonzalez finished with 42 assists and eight digs. She recorded 30 assists and six digs in the win over Ottawa on Oct. 20.

The TCU Horned Frogs made short work of the Brigham Young University squad in a 38-7 victory. Going into the contest, TCU was ranked eighth in the country. TCU is 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the Mountain West Conference.

TCU players Jason Teague (Carthage), Nick Sanders (Kilgore), Wayne Daniels (Kilgore) and Corderra Hunter (Longview) all played major roles on defense. Teague finished with three solo tackles. He had one tackle for three yards of loss. Sanders and Daniels each had three tackles. Sanders had two solo tackles while Daniels had one solo. Daniels also had one sack for two yards of loss. Hunter finished with two tackles (one solo).

Sul Ross State University football player Zach Gideon, a Hallsville graduate, had three assisted tackles as Sul Ross State lost a 29-6 decision to Hardin-Simmons University. Gideon, a senior, had one tackle for one yard of loss. Ore City graduate Steven Rockwell, a Hardin-Simmons running back, carried the ball nine times for 39 yards. Hardin-Simmons is 4-4 overall and 3-3 in the American Southwest Conference.

The Southern Arkansas University volleyball team fell to Christian Brothers University (3-1) and the University of Arkansas-Monticello (3-0). Former Longview volleyball player Jordan White, a sophomore outside hitter, finished with five kills, five digs and two assisted blocks in the loss to CBU. Against Arkansas-Monticello, she had four kills.

Former Longview football player John Writt had 10 tackles as Southern Arkansas lost a 10-3 decision to Delta State University. Writt had eight solo tackles. Teammate Devin Alexander (West Rusk) had five tackles, including four solos. Alexander had two tackles for eight yards of loss, with one sack for six yards of loss.

Special teams player Zach Massingill (Big Sandy) punted six times for 224 yards. His longest went 49 yards, while two of his punts were downed inside the 20-yard line. Fellow SAU special teams player LaMarcus Howard (Longview) returned three punts for 72 yards and two kickoff returns for 37 yards.

For the SAU offense, A.J. Jones (Hallsville) finished with 32 rushing yards on 10 carries and one catch for 16 receiving yards. Longview's Travarus Brown caught two passes for 20 yards for Southern Arkansas.
