LeTourneau University outside hitter Kristen Chapman earned a pair of American Southwest Conference East Division volleyball honors Tuesday.

Chapman, a 6-foot native of Richland, Mich., was named the American Southwest Conference East Division Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year and also garnered ASC Second-Team honors. As a junior, she played in all 28 matches, leading the team in kills with 326.

Jessica Nassau of UT-Dallas was selected the ASC East Most Valuable Player as teammate Melanie Power earned freshman of the year honors. Hallsville graduate Kourtney Adams of East Texas Baptist garnered newcomer of the year honors.

Adams, who transferred to ETBU from Panola College, ranked in the top four in the ASC in hitting percentage, kills and total points won. She led the Lady Tigers in kills (369) and was second on the team in digs (385).

Adams was also named to the All-ASC East first team, where she was joined by teammates Jane Hays, Mary Morgan Swanson (White Oak) and Brittany Herbort. Chelsea Manningham (Longview Christian School) was an honorable mention pick.

New Diana boosters plan alumni game

DIANA — The New Diana Athletic Booster Club will host the first New Diana High School Alumni Basketball game at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at Eagle Gymnasium.

All former New Diana Eagle basketball players are invited to participate. Cost will be $25 and each player will receive a T-shirt. The deadline to enter is Monday.

Admission will be $1 per person. Children under six years old will be admitted free.

Proceeds will help offset costs for the team's trip to the Fairfield Eagle Invitational Tournament, Dec. 10-12.

Golden Gloves seeks boxers

The East Texas Golden Gloves announces the addition of an ''all-comers'' division.

The division is open to male or female hopefuls ages 8-34 who have never boxed before. Go to easttexasboxing.org or call (903) 736-3342 to find the amateur boxing gym nearest you.

The 70th annual East Texas Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament is set for Jan. 28-30.

LHS booster club to host tennis tourney

The Longview High School Tennis Booster Club will host the Longview Turkey Open, a singles and doubles tournament, Nov. 21-21.

Events are for boys and girls ages 12, 14, 16 and 18 singles and 14, 16 and 18 doubles, men's 9.0 doubles, women's 7.0 doubles and open mixed doubles.

The draw will be posted by noon Nov. 19 at www.usta.com (tournament ID: 809708309).

Entry deadline is Friday at 11:59 p.m.

Xtreme to hold tryouts on Saturday

The Athens-based Texas Xtreme semi-professional football team will conduct open tryouts for the upcoming 2010 season at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Arp High School's Bill Herrington-Tiger Stadium.

The Xtreme have qualified for the playoffs seven times in the past eight seasons, including one league championship appearance and four semifinal appearances. Participants must be at least 18, and are required to pay a $20 non-refundable tryout fee. Participants are urged to wear comfortable clothing for basic football drills and cleat-type shoes suitable for turf.

Gobble Wobble set for Nov. 28

The fifth annual Gobble Wobble (1 mile, 5K & 10K run/walk/wobble) is set for Saturday, Nov. 28.

The race is set to begin at Cargill Long/Fourth Street Trail. Registration is set for 8:30 a.m., with the race beginning at 9 a.m.

There is no entry fee, but any donations will benefit Newgate Mission.
