KILGORE — Two young cousins are hoping to provide a more “spooktacular” Halloween and a merrier Christmas for their fellow members of the Kilgore Boys & Girls Club.

Olivia Chalk and Jaida Thurmond, both 10, are asking members of the community to consider donating holiday decorations they no longer use or want.

“We’ve got a few things set up here already, but we’d like to make it really scary for our Halloween haunted house,” Olivia said. “Then we want it to be really pretty at Christmas time.”

The girls are seeking make-believe mummies, bats, skeletons, ghosts and any other items that are sufficiently eerie — but not too frightening for young children — for their Halloween decor.

“Basically, we’re just asking for anything people have, but don’t need any more, that would help put us more in the mood for Halloween,” Jaida said.

The girls are seeking decorations for both the interior and the exterior of the building and have the full support of club director LaKesha Hall for the project.

“We really want the kids who come here to consider this their club, so it means a lot to me to see these girls taking the initiative in seeking more elaborate decorations for our upcoming holiday events,” Hall said.

All children who attend the club are encouraged to come up with ideas to enhance their experiences at the club, Hall said.

“If people are cleaning out their closets and come across any holiday decorations they don’t want, we hope they’ll keep us in mind,” Olivia said.

The girls are students at Kilgore Intermediate School. Olivia has been coming to the Kilgore Boys & Girls Club after school for several years, but Jaida just became a member a few months ago.

“This is a good place to be,” Jaida said. “We just want to make it a bit more festive for the upcoming holiday seasons.”

For Christmas, the girls are hoping to get lights, wreaths and other items to give the club the look of a winter wonderland.

The club is located at 724 Harris St. in Kilgore. Hall said decorations can be dropped off any time the club is open, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.
