An Upshur County man has been charged with murder in connection to the body found Aug. 26 inside a residence Aug. 26.
Douglas Edward Gilliam, 58, was arraigned Sunday morning, according to jail records. He was arrested on unrelated charges Aug. 28, two days after Jack E. Pierce, 45, of Gladewater was found dead inside a residence in the southwest part of the county, Sheriff’s Lt. Freddie Fitzgerald said in a statement released this past week.
Murder charges were added Friday, according to online jail records.
Upshur County deputies this past week confirmed they are investigating Pierce’s death as suspicious.
Pierce was found by deputies who answered a check welfare call, Fitzgerald said
Upshur County Sheriff Anthony Betterton said Monday afternoon his office is not releasing any more information because the death is under investigation.
No one involved in the investigation is releasing any details on how Pierce died, when he died or the address of the house in which he was found.
“Deputies found things at the scene to be suspicious,” Fitzgerald wrote, adding the case is being investigated as a homicide.
Pierce was pronounced dead by Rusk County Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Laura Norred, who ordered an autopsy. Norred declined to comment on the case this past week and said Monday the preliminary autopsy was being held pending the results of the investigation.
