Two-minute drill: 13-4A cross country meet moved to Friday and more

The District 13-4A cross country meet will be Friday at Mount Pleasant High School. The meet was originally to be held today, but according to Hallsville coach Pat Eitel, it was moved because of weather concerns.

The varsity girls will run at 10 a.m., followed by varsity boys, junior varsity girls and junior varsity boys. The top three teams and top 10 individuals advance to the Class 4A Region II Meet on Nov. 7 in Arlington.

Murphy gives verbal to Colorado State

Jefferson High School offensive and defensive lineman Trevor Murphy has given a verbal pledge to play football at Colorado State University, Jefferson head coach Scott Hale told David Smoak of Smoaky.com on Wednesday.

Murphy (6-3, 285) plays both offensive and defensive line, but was being recruited as a defensive lineman.

Heading into Friday's game against Linden-Kildare, Murphy has recorded 34 tackles (17 solos, 17 assists), four tackles for losses, one sack and one forced fumble.

Border battle set for Saturday

CARTHAGE — The 7th annual Battle of the Border High School Preseason Jamboree is set for Saturday at Carthage High School and Panola College.

Scrimmages begin at 9 a.m., and the final scrimmage is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.

Admission is $5 for adults. Students will be admitted free. The event is hosted by the Panola College Women's basketball program.

Teams scheduled to attend include Carthage, Longview (JV and varsity), Pine Tree, Spring Hill, Carthage, Marshall, Tenaha, Gary, Nacogdoches (JV and varsity), Kilgore, Sabine, Hallsville, Tyler Lee, Canton, Diboll, Henderson, Garrison, Chapel Hill, Whitehouse, Gladewater, Hudson, Red River (La.), Huntington, Centennial (La.), T.K. Gorman and Minden (La.).

Each team will play three scrimmages.

The Longview varsity is scheduled to scrimmage T.K. Gorman at 9 a.m. at Panola College's Johnson Gymnasium, Spring Hill at 2 p.m. at Carthage High School Court 1 and Minden, La. at 4 p.m. at Carthage's Court 2. Pine Tree will scrimmage Gladewater at 9 a.m. at Gym A (Fitness Center), Diboll at 1 p.m. at Carthage Court 2 and Tyler Lee at 6 p.m. at Johnson Gymnasium. Spring Hill will scrimmage Minden, La. at noon, Longview at 2 p.m. and Tyler Lee at 4 p.m. all at Carthage Court 1.

Marshall, S. Springs to play in Mount Pleasant

Friday's District 13-4A football game between Sulphur Springs and Marshall, originally scheduled to be played in Sulphur Springs, has been moved to Sam Parker Field in Mount Pleasant.

The game was moved due to wet field conditions in Sulphur Springs.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

Carlisle game moved to Chapel Hill

Carlisle's District 20-A game with Cross Roads has been moved to Chapel Hill High School.

Kickoff is still set for 7:30 p.m.

Fans can meet SFA teams tonight

NACOGDOCHES — The annual Meet the Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks is set for 6:30 p.m. tonight in the gymnasium at First Baptist Church of Nacogdoches. Tickets can be purchased at the door, or from any Nacogdoches Rotary member for $10. The cost of admission also includes dinner.

SFA head coaches Danny Kaspar and Lee Ann Riley will introduce their players and staffs as the teams prepare for the 2009-10 season. The 'Jacks are coming off a 24-8 season, and their second consecutive Southland Conference title. The Ladyjacks return all but one letterwinner from last year's 15-14 campaign.

The Lumberjacks will open the season Monday, Nov. 9, against Northwest Oklahoma State, before heading to Minnesota the following week to take on the Golden Gophers. The Ladyjacks tip off the 2009-10 season with consecutive home games beginning Saturday, Nov. 14 against North Texas.

The SFA women return to the court the following week to host Rice.

PARD open basketball sign-up ends Nov. 3

The City of Longview Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registration through 5 p.m. Tuesday for its youth open basketball leagues at the PARD office at 130 E. Timpson St.

Cost is $60 for boys and girls age groups 8-and-under, 10-and-under, 12-and-under and 14-and-under.

The season begins Saturday, Jan. 9.

Youth church basketball registration taking place

The City of Longview Parks and Recreation Department will hold team registration through Friday for its youth church basketball league at the PARD office at 130 E. Timpson St.

Cost is $285 per team for boys and girls age groups 8-and-under, 10-and-under, 12-and-under, 14-and-under, 16-and-under and 18-and-under.

The season begins Saturday, Jan. 9.

Late registration will be held from Nov. 2-6 at a cost of $310 per team.

LETU golf tourney on tap

The LeTourneau University Golf Classic scholarship tournament is set for Friday, Nov. 6, at The Challenge at Oak Forest.

Proceeds from the tournament support student scholarships.

The four-person, 18-hole event is a Scramble, Shamble & Best Ball.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. and shotgun start is set for 8 a.m.

Entry fees are $150 per golfer or $600 for a four-person team. All players will receive a $50 gift package.

The fee also includes green fees and cart for two, range balls, breakfast for the golfer, lunch for the golfer and spouse (or guest).

PARD adult basketball sign-up taking place

The City of Longview Parks and Recreation Department is conducting team registration through Friday, Nov. 6 for its adult basketball leagues at the PARD office at 130 E. Timpson St.

Cost is $350 per team for men's/women's open, men's church and men's industrial leagues.

The season begins Monday, Nov. 30.

Late registration will be held from Nov. 9-13 at a cost of $375 per team.

Gobble Wobble set for Nov. 28

The fifth annual Gobble Wobble (1 mile, 5K & 10K run/walk/wobble) is set for Saturday, Nov. 28.

The race is set to begin at Cargill Long/Fourth Street Trail. Registration is set for 8:30 a.m., with the race beginning at 9 a.m.

There is no entry fee, but any donations will benefit Newgate Mission.
