For the second week in a row, the Southwest Junior College Football Conference's top defensive player is a Kilgore College Ranger.
J.R. Osunde came up huge in the Rangers' playoff-clinching, 27-10 win over Cisco on Saturday to earn top defensive honors in the league. Osunde had seven tackles, broke up two passes and intercepted three passes — returning one for a touchdown. A week ago, fellow KC defensive back Jimmy Anderson was the SWJCFC's defensive player of the week.
Vincent McNeil of Tyler (offense) and Ernesto Guerra of Trinity Valley (special teams) were also honored by the conference. McNeil rushed for 164 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries and completed 12 of 24 passes for 195 yards and two scores in Tyler's 54-35 win over Northeastern Oklahoma. Guerra kicked field goals of 32 and 45 yards and added three extra points in the Cardinals' 41-14 win over Arkansas Baptist.
PRIME TIME PLAYERS
Other players turning outstanding performances in Nov. 1 games included:
- Da'Sor Horton, NEO — Horton rushed for 180 yards and scored five times on 28 carries in NEO's loss to Tyler. He also returned three kickoffs for 107 yards.
- Mike Hayes and Darrin Moore, Blinn — Hayes rushed for 98 yards and a touchdown, caught three passes and returned three kickoffs for 87 yards in Blinn's 23-20 loss to Navarro. Moore caught seven passes for 90 yards and a touchdown.
- Derrick Hall, Roddy Green, Brandon Joiner, Brad Graham and Trevor Drayton, Navarro — Hall carried 16 times for 162 yards and a touchdown in the Bulldogs' win over Blinn. Green completed 15 of 31 passes for 206 yards and two scores and rushed for 40 yards. Joiner had six tackles and four quarterback pressures, Graham 12 tackles, three tackles for losses and one pressure and Drayton two tackles, two passes broken up and two interceptions.
- Jabroski Smiley, Jedrick Williams and Maurice Hood, Tyler — Smiley caught five passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns in the Apaches' win over NEO. Hood had nine tackles and a sack, and Williams had 13 tackles and an interception.
- Tyler Little, Darnell Williams and Bo Walker, Trinity Valley — Little completed 26 of 33 passes for 266 yards and a touchdown in the Cardinals' win over Arkansas Baptist. Williams had five catches for 103 yards and a touchdown, and Walker rushed for 78 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries.
PLAYOFF TIME
Kilgore's win over Cisco clinched a playoff berth for the Rangers, who will battle Navarro at 3 p.m. Saturday in Corsicana. Tyler will meet Blinn at 1:30 p.m. in Brenham in the other playoff game, with the two winners battling On Nov. 14 at the home field of the highest remaining seed.
MOVING ON UP
Navarro's 23-20 win over Blinn on Saturday moved the Bulldogs into the top spot in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association poll, dropping Blinn to No. 4. Fort Scott, which narrowly defeated Kilgore (21-17) in the season opener back on Aug. 29, moved from third to second and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College is the new No. 3 team. Tyler is ranked 14th this week, one spot up from a week ago.
ODDS AND TRENDS
All seven teams in the SWJCFC averaged at least 365 yards per game and allowed at least 314 yards per outing in the nine-game regular season ... Kilgore outscored opponents 174-113 in the first half of games this season but has been outscored 122-103 in the second half ... Navarro outscored opponents 194-66 in the first half this season ... Blinn scored at least 114 total points in three different quarters this season (114 in the first, 129 in the second and 115 in the third) while also scoring 92 in the second quarter. The Bucs outscored opponents 243-102 in the first half of games this season ... SWJCFC teams were a combined 13-4 against teams outside the conference this season, including a 7-0 mark against Arkansas Baptist.
LEAGUE LEADERS
Northeastern Oklahoma's Horton won the league rushing title with his big game against Tyler. He finished with 1,072 yards and 17 touchdowns. Cisco's Ketaraus Stanton was the conference's only other 1,000-yard rusher (1,019 yards, 7 TD) ... Blinn QB Cam Newton passed for 2,302 yards and 22 touchdowns ... Three players, Kilgore's Chase Ford, Tyler's Smiley and Trinity Valley's Chris Young, finished the season with 30 receptions ... Navarro's Drayton finished with a league-high five interceptions. KC's Anderson and Osunde had four picks apiece ... Blinn's Logan Johnson finished with 12 1/2 sacks.
