Renner, Collard, Cobb among leaders in Senior Invitational

Sunday, November 22, 2009

Debbie Renner, Martha Collard, and Patsy Cobb found their names splashed all across the leaderboard after last weekend's competition in the 16th Annual Longview Lanes Senior Invitational.

Renner and her mates on Let's Roll currently sit in the top Team spot, carding the only 2,500 series (2,512) of the first weekend. She is also second in Doubles, sixth in Women's Singles, and ninth in Women's All Events.

Taking command of first place in Women's Singles was Collard, who also holds down the seventh position in Women's All Events.

Cobb did herself proud in Women's Singles and All Events, finishing third and sixth, respectively.

The pre-Thanksgiving event concludes this weekend at the Spur 63 center with a full slate of Team, Doubles, and Singles competitions. More tournament standings are located in the Scoreboard below.

Grab your partner(s)!

It's almost December and Greater Longview USBC members are busy planning (A) Christmas shopping and decorating, or (B) finding partners for a doubles tournament? Of course the answer is (B)!

The annual Handicap Mixed Doubles, sponsored by Added Space Self Storage and Loper Welding Service, do-se-dos into Oil Bowl for its two-weekend run on Dec. 5 with $1,000 in added prize money. Competition continues Dec. 6, and Dec. 12-13.

Team entry fee is $35, with the deadline set for midnight, Dec. 2. The fee for late entries is $45 and must be submitted no later than one hour prior to the first squad Saturday, Dec. 5. No original entries will be accepted after that time. Re-entries for participants who entered prior to the original deadline will be accepted up to 30 minutes before squad time.

Entries may be placed in GLUSBC boxes at Oil Bowl, Longview Lanes, or Pappy's Rock N Bowl. No entries will be accepted at bowling center control counters.

Condolences

The bowling community offers its sympathy to the family of Clarence Graham, who passed away last Monday at 82 years of age. Mr. Graham was a veteran member of the Longview Men's Bowling Assn. and secretary of Oil Bowl's All Employee league for more than 40 years.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary and daughter, Kelly Bunt, both longtime members of the LWBA Board of Directors.

PBA updates

PBA's World Series Chameleon Championship final rounds are set to be aired today on ESPN, but the time has been changed to 1:30 pm CST.

In the PBA Women's Series, Shannon Phuhowsky battles Carolyn Dorin-Ballard of Keller in the title match for $10,000 in prize money and a berth in the April 2010 PBA Showdown. Dorin-Ballard is looking for her third Women's Series title, while Phuhowsky vies for her second.

On the PBA Men's side, four-time Tour winner Sean Rash is pitted against Ronnie Russell in the first semi-final match. Bill O'Neill and Hall of Famer and Venezuelan heartthrob Amleto Monacelli do battle in the second semis for a spot in the title match worth $25,000. Monacelli is seeking his 20th Tour title, while O'Neill and Russell have yet to break into the winner's circle.

Last Sunday's PBA Viper Championships found both Rhino Page and Ryan Ciminelli "going retro" and falling back on their "tried and true" urethane equipment to help them tame the challenging lane conditions. Page captured his third Tour title and $25,000 over Ciminelli by a score of 268 – 246.

Current USBC Queens champion Liz Johnson defeated former veteran Team USA stand-out Lynda Barnes, 211 – 196, to earn $10,000 and the Women's Series title.

Highlights

Fresh off her recent Mixed State success, Jenny Bostock (190 average) outdid herself in last week's Tuesday Mega Bucks with a 278 game and 720 series. Her performance earned USBC awards for 275 Game and 700 Series.

Eastman bowler Royce Hargrove (181 average) must have realized an adjustment to his game was necessary following his 158 first-game effort recently. Whatever he did seemed to work, and after all the strikes were tallied, a near-perfect 298 game was his result. The major turnaround earned him USBC awards for 11 In A Row and 275 Game.

Bluebonnet bowler Freddie Comer carved a spare out of the 5-10 split.

A pair of Monday Night Seniors chopped down a trio of pesky splits: Andy Husar (5-10 and 3-10), and Ron Waits (3-10).
