The latest girls soccer game between arch rivals Longview and Pine Tree turned out to be a good day for the goalies.
Longview goalie Katherine VanMeter and her Pine Tree counterpart Brittany Hollis each recorded a shutout as their teams played to a 0-0 tie in a Pool A game of the Chick-Fil-A Lady Lobo Invitational on Thursday at Pine Tree Stadium.
Each keeper finished with six saves.
Pine Tree had more quality scoring chances, including the best opportunity of the contest when Hannah Robey had a breakaway in the 25th minute but was denied by a VanMeter kick save. VanMeter also made a diving save on a shot by Amanda Wallin in the 47th minute. It is VanMeter’s second shutout of this season.
“My diving save was my best. On the breakaway I got a little luck,” VanMeter said. “I’m just glad we didn’t lose to Pine Tree.”
Hollis said her best play wasn’t a save. In the first half there was a loose ball on a Longview corner kick, but Hollis poked the ball away.
Hollis’ best save was smothering a blast from 13 yards out by standout Longview midfielder Molly Grisham in the 55th minute as Grisham dribbled in for a closer shot. Grisham provided the majority of Hollis’ save work as Grisham had four shots on goal. Hollis, who is playing full-time for Pine Tree because of an ankle injury to fellow junior goalie Kaiti Lawrence, recorded her first shutout of this season.
“The key to playing Molly is just making sure her shot is in front of you, or if it’s high, knock it over the bar,” Hollis said. “This was probably my best game of the year.”
No overtime periods were played because it was a pool game and both squads had another contest later that evening. Longview (2-2-2) played Copperas Cove late Thursday while Pine Tree (2-1-1) played Plano.
While both head coaches were happy with how their goalies played, they added that their offenses made mistakes.
Longview head coach Chris Yoder said defender Sarah Mack was also critical on defense and midfielder Lauren Hall’s play was solid, but he wanted more quality scoring chances.
“I would have liked us to have more composure on offense,” Yoder said.
Pine Tree head coach Daniel Rich said defenders Ana Solis and Emily Shelton deserved credit for the shutout, but he was not pleased with the progress of his team’s offense this week. Pine Tree dropped a 1-0 decision to Paris North Lamar on Monday.
“We needed better execution on our goal-scoring chances,” Rich said. “They were plays we have run over and over again, but we didn’t execute them well.”
Both teams conclude pool play today. Pine Tree plays Copperas Cove at 10:50 a.m. at Pine Tree Stadium followed by Longview taking on Plano at 12:40 p,m. Longview and Pine Tree will also play a game on Saturday based on how they place in Pool A.
SECOND HALF
Longview’s best scoring chance was in the 79th minute as Anali Magana got a rebound, but her shot was deflected away by a Pine Tree defender. Grisham had a decent scoring chance off a free kick from 39 yards out in the 43rd minute, but Hollis marked the ball well for a save.
FIRST HALF
Robey also had a chance in the 40th minute as a loose ball got away from VanMeter, but the Longview goalie recovered to smother the attempt.
Longview’s best scoring was a blast from 35 yards out by Grisham in the 32nd minute but Hollis was in position to make the stop.
