The College Report: Tatum’s Gonzalez leads Sterling College volleyball team

Former Tatum volleyball player Adriana Gonzalez, a 5-foot-5 junior setter at Sterling College, has 353 assists, an average of 21 assists per match, 127 digs, 43 kills, 11 aces and four block assists. Gonzalez has a .290 hitting percentage.

In the latest Sterling win, a 3-0 victory over Central Christian College, Gonzalez finished with eight assists.

Sterling competes in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Baylor University made short work of Stephen F. Austin (48-0 in a game shortened due to inclement weather). Baylor wide receiver Kendall Wright (Pittsburg) finished with 123 receiving yards on eight catches and one punt return for 11 - 137 all-purpose yards. Wright caught one touchdown pass for 66 yards. The touchdown scored with 3:14 to play in the first half. It was the only play in the drive.

Rodney Chadwick (Carthage) and Tevin Elliott (Mount Pleasant) played for the Baylor defense. Chadwick had three solo tackles, which included one tackle for three yards of loss. Elliott had one solo tackle and one assisted tackle. He had 1.5 tackles for nine yards. He was also in on a quarterback sack.

Southern Arkansas University senior Jordan White (Longview) pounded down 20 kills to lead the Lady Muleriders to a 3-1 victory over Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Southern Arkansas is 6-4 overall and 1-1 in the Great American Conference.

Hardin-Simmons University lost its first game of the year, a 45-28 setback to Mississippi College. HSU running back Steven Rockwell (Ore City) finished with 53 rushing yards on seven carries. He also caught one pass for eight yards.

Iowa State University got three tackles (two solos) from Matt Morton (West Rusk) as ISU won its third consecutive game by beating University of Connecticut 24-20.

Eric Walker (Pittsburg) and Eric McCowan (Marshall) have each logged time for Southeastern Oklahoma State University's football team in their first two games.

Walker, a sophomore cornerback, has started both games. He has 10 tackles (seven solos). McCowan, a freshman defensive tackle, has three tackles (one solo). He has played in both games and started one.

West Texas A&M University cross country runner Amber Moore (Spring Hill) started her cross country season by taking second in the Buffalo Stampede, which was hosted by WTAMU and held at Don Harrington Camp. Moore completed the 5,000-meter race in 19 minutes, 14 seconds. She was the top WTAMU cross country runner to finish. West Texas A&M won the meet with 25 points.

Northwestern State University's football team slipped to 1-2 this week with a 40-7 loss to Southern Methodist University. NSU players David Larsen (Longview) and Cashas Pollard (Tatum) both played in the contest. Larsen, a deep snapper, was perfect hitting all six of his deep snaps and all three of his short snaps. Pollard had three solo tackles in the contest.

University of Louisiana-Monroe is 1-2 on the season. Louisiana-Monroe's DaCorris Ford (Longview) has three solo tackles and two assisted tackles in the first three games. The junior linebacker has one tackle for two yards of loss.

Sam Houston State University defeated Central Arkansas 31-10 in football action last week. For the victors, Desmond Fite (Tatum) had one assisted tackle. UCA freshman defensive back Bryce French (Marshall), a freshman, finished the contest with three tackles (two solos). TJ Adams (Beckville) caught two passes for 21 yards for UCA.
