New City Council off to a good start

Our new city council appears to be off to a good start based on two actions taken so far. The new mayor has proven to be a man of his word as he has fulfilled his pledge to issue a proclamation for Longview's second annual Gay Pride Festival on June 13 from 5 PM until 9 PM at the Heritage Plaza downtown. Last years event proved very successful and this year's should be even more so. I hope to see many of Longview's citizens there as we recognize and celebrate the diversity in our community. Stop by the table of the Democratic Party of Gregg County and say hello.
The second welcome action was to forego the selling of the Paula Martin Jones Recreation Center and keep it in the hands of the city where it can be of benefit to many more of our fellow citizens. Well done to the members of the Friends of PMJ who, along with a coalition of others, worked so hard to keep this resource in the hands of the city. Now the work really begins. It is not enough to keep the city in charge. We must show our commitment to this historic resource by insuring that the new Parks and Recreation Director, as well as the rest of the city staff, put in the time and effort to increase awareness and maintain the center so the maximum number of citizens can participate. We can all take a step in making this happen by joining the center. The membership dues are little compared to the potential good it can do. Join today, either as an individual or a family and we can show the city council that their faith in us has not gone unnoticed. Looking forward to seeing you there too.
