Fun and Games at Boys & Girls Club
“Kids say the darndest things.” – Art Linkletter. I know this is a true statement at the Hughes Springs site of the Boys & Girls Club of the Big Pines. This is what makes the club so much fun for myself and the staff. Games seem to be what makes the Club fun for the children.
Conversations and relationships with the children makes for lots of laughs at our site. The fun starts at 3:30 every day as I call the roll. One day a kindergarten boy, whose brother was absent, told me, “My brother had to go to the dentist to find out why his feet stink.” Another day I complimented a kindergarten girl on her haircut and asked her who cut her hair. She told me her aunt had cut her hair. I asked, “Does she work at a beauty shop?”. She paused and gave me a look that said “what’s that?”. Then she answered with, “No, she works at a hair salon.” Her answer gave me a chuckle as I realized “beauty shop” might be an outdated word. There are many more conversations like this happening at our site because our enrollment has almost doubled this year with the majority of them being younger children, kindergarten through second graders. Kids do say funny things which makes it fun for myself and the staff. Never a dull moment.
Games and other activities make it fun for the kids. We have introduced them to many “timeless’ games, such as checkers, jacks, and a variety of card games. Many of them are learning to play these games for the first time. With today’s technology, computer games seem to be the games of choice. It has been a joy watching them learn to play these “new” games. I like seeing all the interaction that they have with each other compared to none when on the computers. They also still love playing games on the computers which we also do. It’s the best of both worlds, past and present. There is lots of competition going on at the Club.
Fun and games at the Hughes Springs site of Boys and Girls Club of the Big Pines is definitely happening. You know this is true because grandparents on occasion have come to get their grandchildren early and the kids beg them to stay longer. Being grandparents, you know they let them stay and come back to pick them up later.
