Chandler King

Hughes Springs' Chandler King, center, signed with Texas A&M-Commerce to continue his track career.

Chandler King was a standout athlete at Hughes Springs in multiple sports. While he excelled on both the gridiron and hardwood, it was on the oval surrounding Mustang Stadium where he truly made his mark.

King was dominant at the district and area meets in the 400-meter dash, winning gold medals each time and taking a third place bronze at regionals. He garnered gold in the triple jump at area after finishing second in district. King punched his ticket to the state meet in Austin with a silver medal showing at regionals and duplicated that feat at state.

When it came time to select a college to continue his track and field career, King decided on a school less than 100 miles down the road in Texas A&M-Commerce. The Lion track team, coached by George Pincock, finished second at the Lone Star Conference Championships.

“I was very impressed with the athletic program and I think I can make a significant contribution to their success,” said Kennedy, who briefly considered playing basketball at NAIA Central Baptist in Conway, Arkansas.

King, who owns a personal-best 46-7 in the triple jump, was very impressed with improvement current Lion leapers made after enrolling in the program out of high school.

“They had several guys come in jumping around 46 like me. Now they’re hitting around 51 to 52 feet. I think I’ll have a great opportunity to improve my numbers,” said King.

King, who has clocked a 49.1 in the open quarter, believes he can shave three seconds off his personal best. He thinks the coaching he’ll receive in Commerce will help him reach his full potential.

“I’m really excited for the opportunity and can’t wait to get started. I also intend to walk on the basketball team,” King said.

A&M Commerce competes in the LSC with A&M Kingsville, West Texas A&M, Angelo State, Cameron, Eastern New Mexico, Midwestern State, Tarleton State, UT Permian Basin and Western New Mexico.
