SUNNYVALE – After falling in the first game of the area-round series, the Hallsville Ladycats made sure game two was different when they defeated the North Forney Lady Falcons 5-2. Hallsville now holds a record of 30-3 overall while the Lady Falcons are 19-11-1.

“Right there when Lauren (Anderson) made that play, it was a big momentum shift,” Hallsville head softball coach Kayla Whatley said. “Sometimes it just takes a bit play and I think that really got our kids going. We still left people on base but we definitely did better than we did last game.”

Hallsville came away with 10 hits. Jaydin Ainsworth went 3-for-4 on the night with one run and one stolen base. Taylor Freeman went 2-for-4 with a single, a double, one RBI and one run. Lorena Ramirez doubled, scored one run and had one RBI. Loren Anderson and Anahi Ramirez each had a single as Anderson had one RBI. Maddie Melton went 2-for-2 with a walk, one RBI and one single. Ashley Langley reached on an error and scored one run. Jaydin Ainsworth started for the Ladycats. She threw three-and-one-third innings where she allowed two runs on six hits and struck out two batters and only walked one. She was relieved by Melton who earned the win from the circle. Melton pitched three-and-two-third innings, allowing no runs, no hits and struck out one batter.

The Lady Falcons had nine hits on the night. Brooke Cornelison went 3-for-3 with one run. Riley Borton reached on a base hit, a walk and scored one run. Savanna Gun went 2-for-4. Hayeli Acosta reached on a double and had two RBI. Kirsten Sudderth added a single.

With one out in the top of the first, Lorena Ramirez slid into second for the double. She advanced to third on a single from Freeman, putting runners on the corners. Thomas grounded out but scored Thomas for the first run of the game, giving the Ladycats a 1-0 lead heading to the bottom of the first inning where the Ladycats forced the Lady Falcons to go three up, three down.

Anahi Ramirez led off the second inning with a single. The next two batters were retired before Melton was walked, putting two runners on base. That took the Ladycats back to the top of the order where Ainsworth singled to load the bases. However, that was followed by the third out with a fly ball to close the top of the second.

Gun led off the bottom of the second with a single for North Forney’s first hit of the game. That was followed by the team’s second hit when Borton added a single. Cornelison added the theam’s third straight single to load the bases with no outs. A line drive to second was the first out of an unassisted double play, leaving runners on the corners. Ainsworth snagged a line drive in the circle to end the inning and keep the Lady Falcons scoreless as the score remained 1-0.

With two outs in the bottom of the third, Willoughby reached on an error. She advanced to second on a base hit from Gaidos. The final out of the inning came on a 4-3 groundout to bring it to the top of the fourth inning where the Ladycats went three up, three down for the second inning in a row.

A leadoff walk for Borton in the bottom of the fourth was followed by Cornelison’s second single. They both advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt from Manzo. They were each brought home on a bases-

clearing double from Acosta, giving the Lady Falcons their first runs and a 2-1 lead. Maddie Melton then entered the circle where she struck out a batter and retired the next on a groundout to end the inning as the two teams entered the fifth inning with the Lady Falcons leading 2-1.

Melton led off the top of the fifth with a single and advanced to second on an error. She then took third on a bunt single from Ainsworth as the Ladycats had runners on the corners. Ainsworth then stole second.

Melton tagged up on a sacrifice fly from Lorena Ramirez to score and tie up the game. Freeman doubled to score Ainsworth to put the Ladycats back in the lead. Freeman was brought home on an RBI single from Anderson. That gave Hallsville a 4-2 lead heading to the bottom of the fifth inning.

Langley reached on an error to lead off the sixth inning before finding her way to third on a sacrifice bunt from Molly Danna. Langley was brought home on an RBI single from Melton to add to Hallsville’s lead. Ainsworth added her third straight single to advance Melton to second.

Cornelison singled in the bottom of the sixth for her third straight hit. She advanced to second on a sac fly from Manzo. A single from Sudderth put runners on the corners with two outs. The Ladycats defense forced the final out of the inning to bring it to the seventh.

The top of the seventh saw Hallsville go three up, three down again as the Falcons needed a miracle in the bottom of the inning. The first two outs came quickly on a pair of grounders.

The final out then came on a popup to the pitcher to close the game and seal up the 5-2 win for Hallsville. The two will meet again in the series finale at noon today in Whitehouse.
