Marshall’s softball season came to an end Friday night when the Lady Mavericks fell 12-4 to Mount Pleasant.
Friday’s game was the second game in a best-of-three-game series in the bi-district round of the playoffs. The playoff appearance was the first for the Lady Mavs since 2013. Their season came to an end with an overall record of 19-14.
Tatyana Wilkerson batted 1.000 on the night by going 4-for-4 with two runs. Pinky Green went 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI. Avery Ayers went 2-for-4 with a single, a double, a walk, three RBI and two runs. Jordan Dickerson finished 2-for-4 with two runs. Breasia Hargrave reached on an error and a single, scored one run and had one RBI. Jaliss Alvarez reched on two walks, had one RBI and scored one run. Breanna Hargrave earned the win in the circle for the Lady Tigers. She threw three innings, allowing two runs on three hits and struck out one batter. She was relieved by Ayers who threw four innings. She also allowed two runs on three hits and had five strikeouts.
Maggie Truelove went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and two runs. Kacy Ridgeway homered and reached on a walk. Cate Truelove was 1-of-3 with one RBI. Adriana Vences reached on a double and scored one run. Maycee Griffin was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Vences was given the loss from the circle as she threw all seven innings, allowing 14 runs on 11 hits and striking out seven batters.
The Lady Mavs forced the Lady Tigers to go three up, three down in the top of the first. Maggie Truelove led off with a double in the bottom of the first. She then took advantage of a wild pitch and made her way to third. Ridgeway was walked and that put runners on the corners. A sacrifice RBI from Vences allowed Maggie Truelove to score and Ridgeway to get to third. That gave the Lady Mavs an early 1-0 lead.
Green singled in the top of the second for Mount Pleasant’s first hit of the game. She then stole second before taking third on a base hit from Wilkerson and the Lady Tigers had two runners in scoring position. Vaughn reached on a fielder’s choice that allowed Green to score and Wilkerson to advance to third. That tied the game up at 1-1. Wilkerson tried running for home but was tagged out by Ridgeway, leaving the score at 1-1 as the two teams headed to the bottom of the second inning where Marshall went three up, three down to bring up the third inning.
Mount Pleasant went three up, three down again in the third inning. With one out in the bottom of the third, Truelove doubled to right field. She was brought home for her second run of the day on an RBI single from her sister, Cate Truelove to put the Lady Mavs back in the lead, 2-1. Mount Pleasant loaded the bases with two outs thanks to a pair of singles and an error. Hargrave reached on an error as she scored Wilkerson to tie the game up at 2-2. Alvarez was walked and that scored Baylee Craig who was in as a courtesy runner for Lilly, giving the Lady Tigers their first lead of the night, 3-2 as they headed to the bottom half of the inning.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Gray reached on an error and made her way to second but was unable to get any further than that as the inning came to a close with Marshall trailing 3-2.
Ayers led off the top of the fifth with a single and advanced to third on a double from Dickerson.
They each scored on a two-RBI base hit from Green to give the Lady Tigers a three-run lead. Wilkerson’s RBI single scored Green to make it a four-run lead. Hargrave added an RBI single to score Wilkerson and spread Mount Pleasant’s lead to 7-2.
Alvarez was walked, putting two runners on base. Carson Zachry reached on an error as Hargrove found her way home. That was followed by a bases-clearing double from Ayers to score Alvarez and Zachry.
Ayers threw three straight strikeouts in the bottom of the fifth to force the Lady Mavs to go three up, three down and bring it to the sixth inning.
The Lady Tigers got a pair of base runners on but Vences threw three strikeouts and kept them from adding to the lead as the two teams headed to the bottom of the sixth inning.
Ridgeway homered over the left field wall to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning. That made the score 10-3. Adriana Vences followed that up with a double. She was brought home on an RBI single from Griffin to make the score 10-4 heading into the seventh inning.
Ayers reached on a walk with two outs on board. She advanced on a base hit from Dickerson as both runners advanced into scoring position. They were both brought home on a two-RBI single from Green. Green moved to second when Wilkerson was hit by a pitch.
Lilly was walked and that loaded the bases once again for Mount Pleasant.
A strikeout ended the inning and forced the Lady Tigers to leave the bases loaded and give the Lady Mavs one last chance at keeping their season alive, but they were unable to do that as they went three up, three down as their season came to an end.
