With a promise her teams will win on the court, in the classroom and in the community, Mallory Matthews was introduced on Monday as LeTourneau University’s 18th head volleyball coach in program history.

Matthews comes to LeTourneau after spending the past two seasons as an assistant at the University of Texas-Tyler. She is also a former player in the American Southwest Conference, having played four years at East Texas Baptist University.

“I do know the conference well,” Matthews said at a press conference at LeTourneau’s Solheim Center. “Hopefully, that is somewhat of an advantage. I know the teams. I know the players, and I can pass on to my players what it takes to win at this level and in this conference.”

Matthews inherits a program that finished 7-21 overall in 2018, but four of the wins (4-10) came in American Southwest Conference play. She said her YellowJacket teams might lose on the scoreboard occasionally, but they’ll never be outworked.

“We’re going to dive for every ball. A ball won’t hit the floor without us hitting the floor with it,” Matthews said. “When fans leave the gym, there will be no doubt about which team was the hardest working team in the gym.”

Matthews, a Mansfield native, was the 2013 ASC East Division Freshman of the Year in 2013, the East Division Most Valuable Player in 2015 and earned three ASC All-Tournament team selections and was a 2015 AVCA All-American at ETBU. She finished her career with 1,448 kills and 1,222 digs, and still ranks in the top 10 in four categories at ETBU (kills, aces, digs, blocks).

She was an assistant under former Pine Tree High School standout Lyndsay Mashe the past two season at UT-Tyler, which is leaving the conference that now includes UT Dallas, ETBU, Louisiana College and Belhaven.

LeTourneau will begin the 2019 season on Aug. 23 with the annual Blue vs. Gold Scrimmage, followed by an Alumni Day scrimmage on Aug. 24.

Following an exhibition match at home on Aug. 28 against Henderson State, the YellowJackets will open the regular season at the Austin College Invitational on Aug. 30.

The first regular season home match is set for Sept. 17 against Centenary.
