Wintry weather brings snow to northeast Texas

DALLAS (AP) - A winter storm has moved into northeast Texas, canceling flights at the region's busy airport and forcing officials to brace for a difficult morning commute in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

National Weather Service meteorologist Matt Mosier said snow accumulations of up to 4 inches were expected Sunday as temperatures hovered around freezing.

Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport spokesman David Magana said 200 flights, or about a quarter of the schedule, were canceled in anticipation of the weather.

A winter storm warning extended into East Texas, prompting Tyler police to warn residents to limit nonessential driving.

Mosier said overnight lows in the 20s could mean icy roads for ths morning's commute in Dallas-Fort Worth. High temperatures are expected to stay in the 30s at least through the middle of the week.

The National Weather Service has cancelled a winter storm warning that had been in effect until midnight and issued a winter weather advisory in its place.

According to the advisory, East Texas will see snow mixed with sleet and light freezing rain through the evening.

An area of rain mixed with sleet and snow will continue to move across portions of East Texas and northern Louisiana, the weather service said. The precipitation will become very light after midnight.

Sleet accumulations near a quarter of an inch with one or two inches of snow is possible. Ice accumulation from freezing rain will be light. The main impact will be ice on bridges and overpasses along with slush on roads.

<p style="text-align: right;">A winter weather advisory means periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities.
