A Louisiana man was killed in an early morning oil field accident at a drilling location near the O'Farrell community.

Steven Kyle Jones, 41, from Trout, La., fell approximately 50 feet from the derrick to the floor of the drilling rig, according to Captain Scott Sartain of the Cass County Sheriff's Office.

The accident occurred Friday morning, with a 911 call coming in to the CCSO at 2:22 a.m. The gas drilling rig, owned by Energy Drilling Co. based in Natchez, Miss., is located near the intersection of FM 995 and County Road 1116, Sartain said.

"The accident is still under investigation regarding what caused him to fall," Sartain said.

Justice of the Peace Barbara McMillon conducted the inquest and pronounced Jones dead at the scene. His body has been sent his body to Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas for autopsy.

Deputies Eric Lee and Mark West responded to the call and took statements from witnesses at the scene.
