KILGORE - The league-leading East Texas Pump Jacks manufactured a run in the bottom of the first and used a strong outing from Kyle Kubat and a little help from Mother Nature to earn a 1-0 Texas Collegiate League win over the Victoria Generals on Saturday at Driller Park.
John Williams walked, swiped a base, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first to account for the lone run in a game called after six innings due to inclement weather.
East Texas, which has won two in a row and four of its last five, improves to 30-11 with the win and extends its lead over Victoria (24-15) to five games. The Pump Jacks are now 5-2 against the Generals this season with only one regular season meeting remaining between the two teams in Kilgore on Aug. 6.
Kubat (5-0) went the full six innings on the hill for East Texas. He scattered five hits, struck out five and did not walk a batter. Trae Davis was tagged with the loss for Victoria after giving up a run on one hit with four walks and three strikeouts in five innings of work.
Williams and Kash Kalkowski had the lone hits for East Texas.
The Pump Jacks are idle tonight, and then will play four in a row - and seven of their next eight - on the road. East Texas visits Alexandria for two games on Monday and Tuesday and then treks to Acadiana and Brazos Valley before returning home on Friday to host Brazos Valley.
