Smith County wreck leaves 1 dead, 1 injured

A one-car wreck about noon Friday left a man dead and a boy injured outside of Hawkins in Smith County.
Smith County Justice of the Peace Mitch Shamburger pronounced 41-year-old Dresdon Boyd Thomas of Winona dead at the scene.
The wreck occurred at FM 14 and CR 325 in Smith County, south of Hawkins. the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Red Springs Volunteer Fire Department and EMS responded
A helicopter was dispatched to the scene to transport the injured youth, identified as Thomas' son, Kiyondrez Thomas, 7, to Dallas Children's Hospital, officials said.
They said the vehicle was a Corvette and had been driving at a high rate of speed. Investigators said the driver lost control, flipped and rolled about 40 feet. The vehicle then hit a ditch and went up into a tree about 15 feet before sliding back down it.
Officers said both occupants were wearing their seat belts.
