Two-Minute Drill: Carthage's Miller wins junior golf age group, more

<strong>ARK-LA-TEX GOLF:</strong> CANTON - Carthage's Courtlynd Miller shot an 80 to win first place in the girls 15-18 flight at Monday's Ark-La-Tex Junior Golf Tour stop at Van Zandt Country Club.

Hallsville's Connor Howard won the girls 12-14 flight with a nine-hole 53. Gilmer's Samuel Benson (42) and Longview's Logan Moore (45) placed first and second, respectively, in the coed 7-9 division.

Omaha's Louis Hall shot a 90 for third in the boys 16-18 group, and two Mount Pleasant golfers - Rustyn Goolsby (44) and Conner Nelson (47) - went 1-2 atop the boys 10-11 flight.

The tour continues Thursday at Northridge Country Club in Texarkana.

<strong>KC SOFTBALL TRYOUTS:</strong> KILGORE - The Kilgore College softball program is looking for prospective members for its inaugural team. Open tryouts are June 21 at Streamflo Park next to Driller Park.

Registration starts at 9 a.m. Tryouts start at 9:30. Cost to try out is $25. The tryout is open to all college-age players with college eligibility.

The $25 must be paid before the June 21 tryout. Bring cash or check payable to KC Softball to Room 119 in the Student Support Building on the Kilgore College campus. A registration form can be found at

<strong>SOCCER PRACTICES, TRYOUTS:</strong> Open practices for the East Texas United Futball Club, a new club joining the efforts of AC Longview Boys Soccer Club, Longview Premier Force Soccer Club as well as Freedom Girls Soccer Club, will be holding open practices for boys and girls for the following ages at the following locations and times:

Sting ETX/Longview is forming teams in Tyler and Longview.

Tryouts and open practices are set for July 1-2 at Tyler Junior College and in Longview at Paula Martin Jones Recreation Center. Tryouts are 2:30 p.m. on July 1 (ages '02, '01, '00) and 5:30 p.m. on July 2 (ages '02, '01, '00) in Longview. Tryouts are 2 p.m. (ages '02, '00, '99, '98) and 3:30 p.m. (ages '01, '96) on July 1 and 5:30 p.m. (ages '02, '00, '99, '98) and 7 p.m. (ages '01, '96) in Tyler.

Open practices are each Tuesday in June in Longview (5:30 p.m. for '02, '01 and '00) and Tyler (5:30 p.m. for '02, '00, '99, '98 and 7 p.m. for '01 and '96). For information about Sting Soccer in East Texas. visit

ETX Premier-SC 97 Boys will hold open practices for the month of June and tryouts beginning July 1.

ETX Premier-SC is a college showcase team that is currently ranked in the top 15 in the state of Texas. The team travels once a month to premier tournaments and college showcase tournaments in Dallas and surrounding states. Their most recent accomplishment was winning the Adidas SoccerElite Championship & Showcase in Memphis on April 30.

<strong>TOURNAMENTS ON TAP:</strong> GLADEWATER - The 43rd annual East Texas API Benefit Golf Tournament is June 21-22 at Southern Hills Golf Club.

The annual Juneteenth Men's Softball Tournament is Saturday at Longview's Broughton Park, 801 Martin Luther King Blvd.

KILGORE - The first Mudbug Classic Golf Tournament is Saturday and Sunday at Meadowbrook Golf Course.

Cost for the three-man scramble tournament is $450 per team. There is a special event Friday night and crawfish, catfish and a DJ on Saturday. Payout (based on 54 teams; 4 flights pre-flighted) is $1,500 for first, $750 for second and $450 for third.

East Texas Hoops will hold its summer challenge tournament July 19-21 in Mount Pleasant and Mount Vernon.

Entry fee is $235 per team with a five-game guarantee. Trophies will be awarded for first and second in all divisions (5.6/7/8, JV, varsity boys and varsity girls). A play day is Saturday at Winnsboro.

HENDERSON - The Henderson Summer Classic men's softball tournament is scheduled for Saturday at Fair Park.

The tournament is double elimination. First- and second-place teams receive T-shirts and an MVP trophy is awarded. Entry fee is $175.

<strong>BUCKNER CLAY SHOOT:</strong> The 13th annual Texas Bank and Trust Sporting Clays Challenge benefiting Buckner Children and Family Services of Northeast Texas is July 12-14 at Prairie Creek Sporting Clays.
