Longview hosting 14-U state softball tourney this weekend

Softball teams from throughout Texas will compete for a state title during the Texas ASA Girls 14-U "A" State Fastpitch Tournament, to be held today, Saturday and Sunday at Lear Park Softball Complex in Longview.
Sixteen teams will compete in the touranment, representing the cities of Austin, Corpus Christi, Bay City, Wichita Falls, San Antonio, Angleton, Barbers Hill, Bridgeport, League City, Midland, Pearland, Sugar Land, Richmond, Tyler and Mineola.
The tournament features all teams playing two pool games followed with a double-elimination tournament. Each team has a four-game guarantee. Games will be played on Lear Softball Fields 1-4, located at 100 H.G. Mosley Pkwy.
Pool games begin at 7:15 and 8:30 p.m. today. Bracket games begin at noon Saturday. The championship game is set for 4 p.m. Sunday.
Coaches will check in from 3-4 p.m. today at the Stamper Park Resource Center, with a coaches meeting set for 4 p.m.
Opening ceremonies are set for 6 tonight at Lear Park.
Willard Young, ASA District 34 commissioner, is the tournament director and Mike Cranford is the tournament's umpire in chief.
