ABILENE - Pine Tree's Eddie Calico capped his junior powerlifting season with a state championship.
Calico posted a three-lift total of 1,810 pounds to claim the Division I crown in the 242-pound weight class at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association state meet Saturday at Abilene's Expo Center of Taylor County.
Calico not only won the Division I (Class 4A-5A) title for his weight class, but earned the overall championship for all three divisions in the 242-pound class.
Calico eclipsed the 1,800-pound mark for the first time in his career thanks to a 470-pound bench press, a 650-pound dead lift and a 690-pound squat. Pine Tree powerlifting coach Derrick Hennigan said Calico almost set state records for total weight and the dead lift. Calico attempted 700 pounds on his final deadlift attempt, which would have broken the previous record of 695 and given him a new record total of 1,860.
"He got the weight up but couldn't lock his hip through," Hennigan said.
Calico's feats Saturday were an improvement on his regional championship-winning effort in Lindale three weeks ago, when he lifted a total of 1,795 pounds (450 bench, 660 deadlift, 685 squat). All four numbers are Division I Region III records.
Calico has qualified for the state meet two consecutive years and has another year at Pine Tree to aim at state records. The junior, who plays fullback and defensive tackle for the Pirate football team, had 31 tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery during the 2011 season.
Longview also three lifters in the Division I competition.
The best performance by a Lobo was Donovan Webb, who came in seventh in the 275-pound weight class. Webb had a total of 1,600 pounds - 720 in the squat, 370 in the bench and 510 in the deadlift - after a total of 1,560 at the Region III Meet. Alex Fritz of Haltom City Haltom was the state champion with 1,865 pounds.
Kendrel Wilson placed 12th in the 114-pound weight class. Wilson had a total of 810 pounds (315-170-325) after lifting 805 at Region III. Corpus Christi Calallen's Thomas Soto won the state title with a total of 1,030 pounds.
Alex Pierson placed 14th in the 148-pound weight class. Pierson had a total of 1,010 pounds (400-210-400) after lifting 1,070 at Region III. J.J. Gonzalez of Gregory-Portland won the state title with 1,385 pounds.
