The Kilgore College Athletic Department will host a press conference at 10 a.m. Wednesday to announce that the college will begin a women's softball program beginning next fall - and introduce the new coach of the program.
The press conference will be in the Devall Room in the Devall Student Center on the Kilgore campus. All media and the public are invited to attend.
The KC Board of Trustees unanimously approved the creation of the softball program Monday at its monthly meeting and approved the hiring of the first coach of the program, Leslie Messina, who currently coaches at Texarkana College.
KC will take the place of Texarkana College in the Region XIV North Division because Texarkana College is dropping all intercollegiate athletic programs after this school year.
"We are so excited to begin a new tradition of athletic excellence with women's softball," said Jimmy Rieves, athletic director. "With all of the area talent and competitive softball teams in our neighboring high schools, this should be a win-win for the college and the communities."
Messina has been head coach at Texarkana College for the past eight years where her teams won five conference championships, two regional championships and had the school's first two appearances at the NJCAA National Tournament.
