Kilgore merchants open late for holiday event Saturday

KILGORE - Live music, downtown loft tours, a car show and late-evening shopping returns Saturday to the World's Richest Acre with Kilgore's sixth Mingle & Jingle.
"We don't make the merchants close their doors at any time," said event chairwoman Fallon Burns. "So, if people are out and about at 11 o'clock, they'll be open till 11 (p.m.). There's going to be an art auction at the Cornerstone Fellowship Church, and they are having an open mic night."
A former Kilgore Main Street Program director, Burns said Mingle & Jingle also offers a textbook opportunity for people to join Small Business Saturday, named for the shopping day in between the big box-tilted Black Friday and online shopping Cyber Monday.
"It's so very important to shop local," she said. "I'm so glad there's a national push for that."
The live art auction will feature local artists with proceeds fueling downtown activities all year through the Main Street program.
Live music also will spill from the sidewalk beneath the Crim Theater marquee with Johnny and the Night Crawlers laying down a groove.
Holiday sounds also will waft from Citizens Bank where the Kilgore High School orchestra will tune up.
Hors d'oeuvres and libations should keep shoppers in good spirits as they stroll beneath eight blocks of downtown Christmas lights.
"There's just so much food," said Burns, who lives in one of three lofts on the tour. "You can just go from shop to shop, eating and drinking."
Coupon books available for $10 this year will lead to discounts at many of the 20-plus shops. The discount guide includes a Mingle & Jingle mug and admission to the loft tour.
