A woman was shot and killed and her son kidnapped about noon in the 3300 block of Bain Place in Tyler, according to Tyler police spokesman Don Martin.
The suspected shooter, the victim's ex-husband James W. Calvert, was last seen driving a silver and gray 2004 Buick Le Sabre with a license plate reading DP4 G858, Martin said.
It is believed that Calvert kidnapped his 4-year-old son, Lucas James Calvert, who was last seen wearing grey sweatpants.
In 1999 Calvert was charged with aggravated assault family violence according to the Smith County judicial records.
"We do believe that there were ongoing issues between the Calvert and the victim," Martin said.
Officials with the Tyler Police Department did not know Wednesday afternoon where Calvert was headed.
As of 2 p.m. Kirk Haddix, spokesman for the Gregg County sheriff's office had not been alerted about the kidnapping.
An Amber Alert has been issued for Lucas Calvert.
41-year-old Calvert is about 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs roughly 185 pounds with brown hair and eyes.
Lucas Calvert, 4, is about 3 feet tall and weighs between 30 and 40 pounds with brown hair and eyes.
Martin said several federal agencies were on scene including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Marshals office.
