Kilgore, Carthage rise in football poll after wins

Kilgore and Carthage, on the heels of impressive wins over 4A teams, made jumps in the Class 3A poll this week with the release Monday of the Associated Press high school football poll.

Kilgore, a 38-6 winner over previously unbeaten Mount Pleasant, moved from eighth into a tie for fifth this week. The Bulldogs are tied with La Marque. Carthage, coming off a 44-21 win over Nacogdoches, moved one spot from ninth to eighth.

In Class 4A, John Tyler remained at No. 4 after defeating Class 5A Mesquite Horn 35-30. Tatum, idle last week, remined at No. 4 in Class 2A, while New Boston moved from 10th to eighth following a win over Class 3A North Lamar.

Joaquin moved up two spots in Class A, jumping from seventh to fifth.

Longview in Class 5A, Gilmer and Henderson in 3A, Daingerfield, Hughes Springs, Troup and Arp in Class 2A and Alto and Carlisle in Class A all received votes.

Top-ranked teams for the week included Katy, up from second to first in 5A, Pearland Dawson in 4A, Navasota in 3A, Refugio in 2 and Munday in Class A.
