Rep. David Simpson withdraws from House speaker race

Texas Rep. David Simpson began his second legislative session like he ended his first, almost two years ago, with a personal privilege speech aimed at House Speaker Joe Straus III.
This time, instead of criticizing the leader of the lower chamber in Austin, Simpson withdrew his challenge to Straus' job.
But, it wasn't because the Longview Republican has embraced Straus' style as speaker after spending the past several months recruiting House members to rebel against that style.
"If fear of retribution were not so very real, conscientious support for an alternative choice for speaker would not cause such trepidation," Simpson said minutes after Secretary of State John Steen opened the 83rd Legislative Session in the House. "But, since it is, and absent a certainty of winning this contest, at the request of my colleagues, I withdraw my candidacy."
