Longview parks board to consider disc golf course, KLB project

Longview's Parks and Recreation Advisory Board on Monday will consider the final plans for a new disc golf course and a request to beautify property near the intersection of Texas 31 and Spur 63.

City officials hope both projects will draw visitors to Longview by providing a venue for well-attended disc golf tournaments and by expanding an outdoor entertainment district along with the Longview Arboretum and mountain bike trail.

At the noon meeting, board members may green-light a proposed 18-hole, advanced disc golf course at Hinsley Park that would run through the wooded area just north of Hawkins Parkway.

Hayden Henry, a News-Journal sports writer who has led the effort for the disc golf course, said he hopes it will draw regular visits and tournaments.

"Disc golf is a sport where people travel all over the place to play. We are constantly traveling to Tyler or Shreveport ... to play these more challenging courses," Henry said.

Longview already has one 18-hole course at Guthrie Park.

"The new one at Hinsley will be a complete 180, as far as the level of difficulty," Henry said. "Anybody that has come to Longview to play disc golf has probably not come back a second time. This one in Longview is probably the best beginner course I have ever seen, but the new one will draw players."

Board members also will consider a proposal by Keep Longview Beautiful to use a $270,000 Governor's Community Achievement Awards grant to create a community gathering place at a busy Longview intersection.

The plans are to have a common area or plaza next to the arboretum. The Grace Creek bike trail will also be extending through the area. The look and use of the land will continue to be discussed as the project is developed.

The proposal to use the grant on the stretch of land at Texas 31 and Spur 63 likely will be presented to the City Council in late July.

In other business, members will hear updates on on-going projects, including the Longview Arboretum, mountain bike trail, Jack M. Mann Splash Park and tournament schedules.
