Police: Narcotics may be factor in fatal Longview shooting

From Staff Reports
July 8, 2013 at 11 p.m.

With yellow crime scene tape stretched across the front yard, Longview police investigators came and went through a small wood frame house in the 300 block of Bonner Street Monday where, the night before, a teenager was fatally shot and another person wounded.

Police remained tight-lipped about the shooting death of Joey Lee Espy, 19 - saying only that narcotics may have played a part in the homicide.

The second victim, identified by police as a female, was taken to Good Shepherd Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The victim's name and age were withheld.

Both were found inside the house on Bonner Street, a two-block street that connects Cotton and East Timpson streets east of Mobberly Avenue.

About 75 people gathered in the neighborhood Sunday night as police and paramedics responded to the deadly shooting. No one in the swelling crowd said they knew what had happened.

Police said multiple gunshots had been fired but investigators had no hard leads in the case.

Espy, also was known by the name of Joey Lee Henderson, was held in the Gregg County Jail four times the past 11 months, according to the county's online judicial records website.

On Oct. 22, he was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of assault causing bodily injury.

On Feb. 6, he was arrested on a charge of contempt of court, disobedience of a court order.

On May 7, Espy was arrested on a charge of assault causes bodily injury family violence.

He was sentenced to 150 days in the county jail on May 28 after pleading guilty to misdemeanor charge of assault causing bodily injury in connection with the October incident.

He was released from jail June 8.

Police are asking anyone with information in this case contact Detective Terry Davis at (903) 237-1199. If the tipster wishes to remain anonymous they can contact Crimestoppers at (903) 236-7867.
