KILGORE – It didn't take Mitch Meyer long to adjust to life in the Texas Collegiate League.
Meyer (Kansas State), who had one hit in his East Texas debut on Saturday, homered twice and drove in five runs on Sunday to lead the Pump Jacks to a 5-1 win over The Woodlands Strykers in game one of a TCL doubleheader at Driller Park.
At presstime, the Pump Jacks led the Strykers 12-9 through six innings in the second game of the twinbill. East Texas built a 7-0 lead, but the Strykers hit three home runs in a seven-run fourth inning to get back in the game.
Ryan Hope and Joey Armstrong had four RBIs apiece through four innings for East Texas in the nightcap.
In the opener, The Woodlands took a 1-0 lead in the opener when Dirk Masters doubled with two outs and scored on an error in the top of the fourth inning.
The Pump Jacks (9-12) were kept off the board until the bottom of the seventh when Meyer launched a leadoff home run to left to tie the contest and force extra innings.
In the eighth, East Texas' Connor Huesers was hit by a pitch with one out. Brooks Marlow doubled, and former Pine Tree Pirate Garrett McMullen walked to load the bases.
A strikeout brought Meyer to the plate with two outs, and he belted his second home run of the night – a walk-off grand slam to make the final 5-1.
Jordan Johnson earned the pitching win for the Pump Jacks. He worked a complete game on the hill, giving up a run on three hits while striking out nine and walking one.
The Pump Jacks are idle tonight, and will visit league-leading Brazos Valley (19-3) for games on Tuesday and Wednesday.
East Texas will return home next Thursday and Friday to host The Woodlands. Game times are set for 7:05 p.m. at Driller Park.
