Police: Shootout near Kilgore College possibly gang-related

KILGORE - A shooting incident a week ago near the Kilgore College campus may have been gang-related, Kilgore police said Tuesday.

Investigators said they recovered as many as 30 shell casings that were fired from several handguns during the March 4 incident.

The shooting apparently was a continuation of a fight on campus earlier that day. Witnesses told police the same two people later continued the fight in an off-campus alley near Houston and South streets.

That's when the shooting started, said Kilgore police spokesman Capt. Roman Roberson.

When the gunplay began, a crowd that had gathered to watch the fight dispersed. It was not clear if the two were shooting at each other or into the crowd.

Roberson said more people soon arrived in vehicles, apparently to join the fray.

"Some information has come in that would suggest it could be gang-related," Roberson said.

Witnesses gave descriptions of suspects and of three vehicles that were spotted leaving the scene. They were a tan older-model Chevrolet Caprice, a dark green Chevrolet Suburban or Tahoe with large wheels and an older model Monte Carlo, according to police reports.

The incident, which was reported after 8 p.m. March 4, led to a campus lockdown under the college's Ranger Alert system. Students were asked to stay inside as police investigated.

Kilgore police are working with Kilgore College police to identify the suspects.

Anyone with information about the incident can contact Gregg County Crimestoppers at (903) 236-STOP or Kilgore College Police Department Detective Tim Dukes at (903) 983-1559.
