Pine Tree powerlifters among area contingent at state championships
March 14, 2013 at 11 p.m.
Derrick Hennigan calls Pine Tree senior powerlifters Alex Jehlen and Megan Wood "program builders." If all goes well this weekend, Jehlen and Wood - along with Lady Pirate teammates Francely Lopez and Breanna Ingram - might need a different title.
Jehlen, Wood, Lopez and Ingram - along with alternate Lexi Schepleng - are in Corpus Christi to compete in the Texas High School Women's Powerlifting Association State Championship Meet. They'll be joined by a host of other East Texas lifters. The Class 3A and 4A lifters compete today, while the 1A, 2A and 5A lifters compete on Saturday.
"Megan and Alex helped get this program started," Hennifan said. "They helped recruit some of the other girls."
Jehlen, who lifts in the 123-pound division, earned outstanding lifter honors at the regional meet and set regional records in the squat (325 pounds) bench press (170 pounds) and total (815 pounds).
Ingram (105-pound division) won the regional title with a 605 total pounds. Lopez (114-pound division) was second and Wood (114-pound division) was third.
Schepleng finished third in the 198-pound division.
Pine Tree finished third at the regional meet, held at Wills Point High School.
