JEFFERSON - Jefferson offensive coordinator and former Ore City athletic director/head football coach Derek Simmons was named to the same position at Jefferson after being approved at a school board meeting on Tuesday night.
Simmons takes over for Jerry Bennett, who announced his retirement on May 15 after his second stint at the school.
Simmons will have some big shoes to fill after the success of Scott Hale (five playoff appearances in as many seasons and now an assistant at Marshall) and Bennett, who made the postseason in the first of his two seasons at the helm before losing a third-place tiebreaker in 2012.
Simmons was offensive coordinator under Bennett at Linden-Kildare after Ore City before following the 30-plus year coaching veteran to Jefferson, where he's served the last two seasons.
